Yangzhou, Jiangsu, China

History

Yangzhou, once an ancient city of China with 2,500 years of history, is today a modern port city and an industrial hub for the region, while still maintaining its rich cultural heritage.  Dynasties ago, Yangzhou were already a prosperous place with a famous harbor, rated as one of the largest cities in East Asia.  Today, Yangzhou is on the rise again, economically, culturally and politically.  Yangzhou is the home of the former President of China, Mr. Jiang Zemin.

China’s famous poets of the Tang Dynasty, Li Bay and Baijuyi, had written many proses and poems praising Yangzhou.  One of Yangzhou’s favorite sons, a monk named Jianzhen, sailed to Japan six times, establishing a milestone in international communications.  During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Yangzhou was the salt-supplying base for the central provinces of China and the vital link in transportation between northern and southern China.  The international explorer Marco Polo of Italy came to visit Yangzhou.  Zheng Benqiao, a famous Chinese painter in the Qing Dynasty, headed a group in Yangzhou which had profound influence on Chinese art; this group became known as the “Eight Eccentrics” of China.  Emperor Qianlong came all the way from the north to visit Yangzhou nine times; Emperor Kangxi did it three times. Zhu Ziqing, one of the most famous modern writers and scholars of China, has always pride himself as a native of Yangzhou, grateful to be nourished by the rich culture of the city.  Quite a few of the celebrated personalities you come across in the study of Chinese culture and history, such as the novelist Li Hanqiou, have close ties to Yangzhou.

Yangzhou has always been known in China for its Yangzhou style drama, jade carvings, lacquer ware, and its unique Yangzhou style cuisine. No wonder Yangzhou was named one of the twenty-four most famous historical cities of China by the State Department of China in 1982.

Come catch the “raves and waves of Yangzhou” and join us in a guided tour of this unique city, where you can experience some of China’s finest in history and culture, while discovering modern day business opportunities for yourself and your company.

Yangzhou Location and Transportation

Yangzhou, located at the low reaches of the Yangtze River, with the Yangtze River to the south and Huai River to the north, is in the central part of China’s Jiangsu Province. The Grand Canal passes through the city. With a solid transportation infrastructure, there is easy access from Yangzhou to other major cities of China: 1.5 hour to Nanjing, 2.75 hours to Shanghai, and 8 hours to Beijing, by ground transportation.

Yangzhou covers an area of 6638 sq.km. with a population of 4.5 million people. It is the administrative center for the three districts of Guangling, Jiao, Hanjiang and the four important cities of Jiangdu, Gaoyou, Baoying and Yizheng.

Port: Yangzhou is a first tier China port opening to the world.  Strategically situated in the intersection of the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal, it has nine 10,000-ton berths and is capable of berthing 50,000-ton ships. At present, there are nearly 30 companies at the Yangzhou Port operating the container transportation business, including such firms as Zhongyuan, Zhonghai, MAERSKOOCLHMMEVGCMAZIMHJKL, etc. Their ships stop at the Yangzhou Port nearly 30 times a week, picking up containers to ship to all parts of the world.  At the same time, the Yangzhou Port is an important transit port for the upper-middle reaches of the Yangtze River as well as for north Jiangsu Province, south Shandong Province and east Anhui Province.

Highway: Jing-Hu and Ning-Tong highways cross the city of Yangzhou, constituting the framework of the city's highway system. The construction of a new and modern highway with the function of "transportation and protection from flood" on the northern bank of Yangtze River is under way, it will connect three ports(Nantong, Yangzhou, Nanjing), three bridges (Jiangyin, Runyang, Nanjing) and three cities (Yangzhou, Nantong, Nanjing) of China.
